Are you one of those people who chronically show up to work late, call out sick, complain about your job or don’t take it seriously? If so, you have a horrible work ethic! No matter what you do for a living, I feel you should always maintain a good work ethic. Even if you aren’t doing something you love, you should put your best in it so that it gives back as much as you put in. Whatever feelings you have about your job are being multiplied and brought right back to you. I’ve had jobs where I loathed going into work everyday or took days off every chance I got. Looking back, I either should have done something about my lack of interest in my job or worked harder. I should have been more grateful for the position I was in! I had a job where I showed up to work with no makeup, jeans and flip flops. Although I was allowed to wear whatever I wanted to wear, I should have taken more pride in myself and my job so that I could attract more opportunity. I had a bartending job where I started to feel like I was growing out of it. I started to lose enthusiasm of going into work, of my appearance and with my customer service. I think the decrease in motivation was due to the fact that I started to make less money as the economy got worse. Well, I started reading inspirational books and trying to get back into actively living with positivity. I started visualizing and believing that I had the best job ever, that I was blessed to be able to get to go to work! Everyday before work I would envision a busy day and endless amounts of cash in my tip bucket. I took more pride in my appearance, I went above and beyond to be happy and joyful at work and I made myself more happy to be there if that makes any sense. As soon as I lived as if I had everything I wanted at work, everything started changing. Time went by faster at work, customers tipped more, better shifts opened up and I was happier. No matter how my day went, I reminded myself… it could always be worse, and I could always be one of those people without a job. I was lucky.
Being Late/Taking Time Off:
Until you have reached the status of CEO, Director or some type of Executive level, or even Owner of your own company, you should ALWAYS come into work on time. The same goes for taking time off of work. Try to refrain from taking unnecessary time off of work especially if you are still new at your company. Put your best foot forward! Show that you care about your job, even if you don’t! Whatever you put in, you get back. That’s the law of attraction. Like attracts like.
Complaining:
Constantly complaining about your job isn’t going to do you any good. What are you getting out of it? Who wants to hear you complain all the time? If you really hate your job, you should put forth effort into looking for a new one. While you look for a new job, do the best you can at your current position. Chances are with the tough economy jobs are not a dime a dozen anymore. If this is the case, bloom where you are planted. Make the most of your job by looking at the silver lining. Hopefully you aren’t homeless, you have a roof over your head and you are able to pay your bills. If this is the case, you are doing well compared to the people that sleep under the nearby freeway overpass. If you keep complaining, you will only attract more to complain about. If you are grateful and start counting the positives, then you will start to see great things happening at work. Just as in everything, if you look for flaws you will find them. If you look for positives you will find them. Stop complaining and start working harder. There is always someone out there that will gladly trade places with you in a heartbeat. Just remember, it can always get worse… so don’t let it.
Attire:
Dress your best! Don’t dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want. Take pride in your appearance and show a version of yourself that you want reflected back in life. If you dress sloppy, you will attract slop.
Go above and beyond in your job, stay later, volunteer for more responsibilities and projects. When are salary jobs ever 9-5 anymore? If you come in at 9am and leave at 5pm every day then you will never rise to the next level. You have to prove yourself to others by going above and beyond your position. If you are asked to work extra hours, then work those extra hours. Show that you have what it takes and that you are ready to rise. Otherwise, you will always be stuck where you are. With work you always need to keep your feet moving and planning your next move otherwise you will stay stagnant and unsatisfied. Stop with the excuses, successful people don’t want to hear your excuses. They don’t want to hear why you can’t make things better, they want to hear and see how you are going to make things better.
Remember… while you are complaining about your life, someone out there is fighting for theirs. Someone out there will gladly switch places with you… do the best that you can and start making things happen.
